How Workday parses a resume
Workday extracts your work history into a structured form: employer, title, dates, location, then bullet points. The candidate then often reviews the parsed output before applying. If the parser misreads your resume, you will see it as garbled fields in the application form.
The parser reads top-to-bottom, left-to-right. Two-column layouts confuse it: a typical failure is that the right column gets read interleaved with the left, producing a nonsense work history. The fix is single-column layout, every time.
Workday matches dates aggressively. "Jan 2020 - Present" parses cleanly. "01/2020 to date" sometimes does not. "Jan-Mar 2021" is also fragile. Use full-month-name plus four-digit year, separated by a clear dash, and write Present without quotes.
Formatting Workday actually likes
Single column. No tables. No text boxes. No headers or footers (those are sometimes ignored entirely). Use Heading styles (H1 for your name, H2 for sections, H3 for job titles) only if exporting to PDF; in DOCX the styles are ignored anyway and the parser sees raw text.
Standard section headers: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Workday recognizes these literal strings. "Career Highlights" or "Engagement" as a header is unreliable.
PDF or DOCX, both are accepted. PDF parses slightly more consistently because it preserves layout. If your DOCX uses any unusual formatting, convert to PDF before applying.
The four common parsing failures
Two-column layouts: skills sidebar on the right column, experience on the left. The parser interleaves them and your work history reads incoherent.
Tables for the experience section: even a borderless table breaks parsing. The fix is converting to plain paragraphs.
Custom bullets (chevrons, arrows, em-dashes used as bullets): Workday sometimes renders these as the bullet character literally inside your bullet text. Stick to standard round bullets or simple dashes.
Header/footer with name and contact info: Workday often ignores those regions, which means your contact info disappears from the parsed application. Put name and contact in the document body.

How to verify your resume parses cleanly
Apply once and watch the parsed output. Workday shows you the parsed work history before you submit. If a field is wrong, your resume formatting is the problem. The fastest fix is restructuring to single-column with clean dates.

Frequently asked questions about the Workday ATS
Does Workday read PDF or DOCX better?
Both work. PDF tends to parse layout more consistently because the format preserves positioning. If your DOCX has any unusual formatting, convert to PDF before applying.
Should I include a photo on a Workday resume?
No. Photos cause parsing errors and are a US bias-screening flag. Photos are also irrelevant to Workday's matching algorithms.
How important are keywords on a Workday resume?
Critical. Workday's matching algorithm scores your resume against the posting's required skills. Missing a literal keyword like "AWS" because you wrote "Amazon Web Services" can drop your score. List both.
Will Workday auto-reject me if my resume is two columns?
Not always. But the parsed work history will be garbled, which makes recruiters less likely to read further. Single column is the safe default.
Can I use action verbs and bullet points on a Workday resume?
Yes, and you should. Bullets parse cleanly. The advice to avoid "fancy formatting" means avoid tables and columns, not avoid bullets.
Tailor a resume for a Workday role
If the role is on Workday, the resume needs to be parser-clean and keyword-matched to the posting. ATSHack rewrites your existing resume against the specific posting and exports an ATS-safe PDF and Word file in 60 seconds.
